How did you learn to ride a bike?

When I was about 3 years old I had a generic Big Wheel that my mother would let me ride in the garage.  She was not much of an outdoors person.  She hated bugs, mud and creepy, slimy animals aka snakes, frogs, toads, etc.  Needless to say, when I was little we didn’t spend a whole lot of time outside together.

I was probably 7 or 8 before I got my first two wheeled bicycle.  We lived in the country  so we didn’t have paved walkways that I could use.  Mom never allowed us to ride on the road.  We lived on a blind curve and it wasn’t exactly safe.

Mom taught us how to ride our bikes in the yard.  It was more or less hold on for dear life as I push you down this hill.  After a few nasty spills I finally asked mom not to help me anymore.  I taught myself how to ride.  When my brother was old enough and I passed down my first bike (poor kid it was a strawberry shortcake with pink handlebars) and taught him how to ride.

Would you like to give your child a leg up on learning to ride without the fear and trepidation of just hopping on a full size two wheeler can bring?  The manufacturers of the Skuut beginner’s bicycle have created a bike for ages 2 to 5.  It has no pedals, is made of wood and is the perfect size for indoor use.  The bike is intended to help your child improve balance and learn to manage a bicycle to the point of gliding without their feet on the ground.  Cool idea don’t you think?

Our friends over at Playdate Picks (3/11/09), As They Grow Up (3/5/09),  and Grab Bag Reviews (3/4/09) are all participating in a contest to give away a Skuut beginner’s bicycle to one lucky winner.  Please visit all their sites for the complete rules and all the opportunities to enter to win.
