I Am A Princess Disney Commercial

Most commercials are nothing but an attempt to convince you to buy a gadget, appliance or toy, etc. you don’t necessarily need.  Today I saw I commercial that I really enjoyed and hope that my girls see over and over again.  The ‘I Am A Princess’ Ad campaign definitely showcases Disney characters and movies, but it’s message is less commercialized, very positive and clearly shows what it really means to be a true princess.

Typically, when we think of a little princess we picture a girl in a pink tutu and  a sparkly tiara or a young woman who has everything they need and want and then some and a spoiled attitude.  That’s what I think of anyway.  In stark contrast this commercial portrays a princess as a young girl who values bravery despite obstacles, loyalty, trust, kindness, generosity, standing up for yourself and others and standing with others, compassion, family bonds and keeping promises.  It’s all about who you are inside and how you treat others which makes you a princess NOT what you have, who you are in name, what you look like or where you come from.

When I saw the commercial it made me think of the young Pakistani girl, Malala Yousufzai,14, who spoke out in support of education for girls.  She knew that tradition was against her, she knew there were militant forces in her country who were vehemently opposed to the idea of educating women, seemingly insurmountable odds, but this did not stop her.  She showed she was a true princess by standing up for herself and others.   Deep down she had to be scared, but her resolve was to be brave. To the dismay of many in Pakistan and the world over she and two of her classmates were shot by the Taliban in an effort to silence her efforts.  Gladly she has survived the attack and is recovering in England.

We need more commercials like this that promote family values, confidence, high self esteem and selflessness.  When we consider other’s rights and needs before our own it leads to peace and encourages us to be unselfish
