Who Do You Love?

The answer to the question “Who do you love?” is not as straightforward as you think.  First, you may say your parents, your mate, your kids or your best friend.  Are you being honest with yourself?  Do you spend time and energy expressing this love toward those individuals?  Can you say without a sliver of doubt that your loved ones actually understand that you love them?  If you can’t say yes then your love may not be as complete as you claim.

Selfishness is the antithesis of love.  You don’t have to be actively selfish depriving others of needs or wants to be lacking in love.  Sometimes it is a mere deprivation of time and attention.  How many times have told your kids you were too tired  to play with them or told them to be quiet because they were making too much noise during your TV watching?  Don’t get me wrong, I understand that after a long days work that you are mentally exhausted and that through that work you are providing for the well-being of your children.  When they get older they will appreciate that they were never lacking, but I can tell you from experience that depriving them of attention and therefore a relationship with you as a parent will far supersede any material sustenance you provided.

The same goes for your significant other.  Do you show you truly love them by giving of your time?  Going out on dates is fun and necessary for a healthy relationship, but the moments that you can spare to have an uninterrupted and sometimes deeply emotional conversation with your loved one are the moments that matter most.  Is there something that your loved one finds very important?  Something that would mean the world to them if you would share it with them even if you didn’t particularly like it?  Sacrificing your time on their behalf is an expression of love.  You and your time are a valuable commodity.  Using it wisely in behalf of those you say you love will help you prove the love you have for them.

So, who do you love? Only yourself or do you allow your love to encompass others by what you are willing to sacrifice in their behalf.
