For quite some time I have tried to avoid the use of any underarm application that was a combination of antiperspirant and deodorant.  While I was working outside of the home I used an antiperspirant every day until a co-worker enlightened me to the dangers of using the aluminum containing products.  I ceased using them unless I was going to be under real stress or in a very public situation where excess perspiration was going to be an embarrassing issue.  Even then I noticed that my underarms would break out in painful cysts and would leave my underarms raw with the most infrequent use.  In addition my underarms seem permanently darkened from years of antiperspirant use.

First Impressions

First of all I was excited to try an all natural deodorant only alternative to the synthesized commercial products available at large retailers.  No one likes to stink, especially when they are around others.  My package arrived from Israel in a well padded registered envelope.  To my surprise it arrived in one piece.  Even before opening the envelope I could perceive the all to familiar scent of patchouli – very reminiscent of the fragrance in health food stores I would frequent with my parents as a child.  I’ve always liked the scent of patchouli.  My only worry is if it would be too much for those around me.

Consistency and Application

The consistency of the deodorant was more like a cream or ointment than a traditional “stick” or even a gel deodorant.  This took a little getting used to.  Since the deodorant is very easily spread it is easy to put on too much if you use the container itself as the applicator.  I would, as I did, use your fingers to scoop up a little bit of the deodorant mixture and massage evenly to your underarm area.  Putting on too much may result uncomfortable because of the texture of the corn flour which will ball up and fall down your clothes next too your skin and the oiliness of the coconut oil if it’s not massaged into your skin well enough.  Plus, the coconut oil will, although temporarily, stain the arm pit area of your shirt if the deodorant is not massaged in completely.

One suggestion I have about the stick applicator is that maybe they could use a dosing system like those found on some commercially available gel deodorants.  It’s basically a stick applicator with a plastic lid permanently over the deodorant gel stick with perforations in the plastic and the dial clicks for each “dose” of deodorant dispensed.  The plastic also helps to massage the product into the skin.

Effectiveness

Since this is a deodorant only this product will not interfere with your natural perspiration – you will continue to sweat.  To my surprise this Patchouli Deodorant Stick was the most potent and effective product I’ve ever used to disguise the scent of my perspiration.  I used it in very hot weather and during times of vigorous work and exercise.  Whereas other products would still leave me smelling oniony or overly sour the Patchouli Deodorant stick’s natural ingredients were able to mask my sweat smell  without being overpowering.  I believe this is the case because the ingredients are more than just fragrance but have antiseptic properties as well.

As far as fragrance goes I found it pleasant and not overwhelming.  My husband is not one to keep quiet when he sees or smells something he finds unpleasant and he did not comment on my new deodorant at all.

Something Weird

This may have nothing to do with the Patchouli Deodorant stick at all, but I did experience an extreme darkening of my left armpit during the month that I was using it.  I did some research and found that there is any number of things, antiperspirants included, that could cause this.  Since I had not used any antiperspirants I was puzzled so on the suggestion of one beauty site (when I find the link I’ll post) I exfoliated my underarm area.  This was able to remove the majority of the dark, almost blackened skin.  The only other thing that had changed in the same period as using this deodorant that may have contributed to this condition was a new razor with exfoliating and moisturizing bars on the sides that I’d been using to shave my underarm area.  I’m going to look deeper into the ingredients of those moisturizing bars because from my research the coconut oil in the Patchouli Deodorant should have helped whiten the skin, not darken it.
