Naturepedic Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Cover Review #sponsored

Thanks to Naturepedic I received a twin size organic cotton flannel waterproof fitted mattress cover for the purposes of this review.

When Naturepedic contacted me to review their mattress covers I was really tempted to ask for one for my queen bed, but I knew that my little girl’s mattress needed one more than I did.  She sweats profusely when she sleeps and though she has been potty trained since two and a half there is always the potential for accidents.  Plus, I can’t tell you how many times, even though I’ve told her again and again, not to take food and drink into her room or get into bed with stinky feet she still does it.  One day she’ll learn, but in the meantime I have to worry about how to clean and dry the mattress! I can’t exactly throw it into the washing machine.  That would be nice though because I’d be able to wash out all the sweat, body soil and (gulp) dust mites that accumulate on the mattress.  But alas even a crib mattress can’t be thrown into the washing machine.

This is where the Naturepedic organic cotton mattress cover comes into play.  It is available in a waterproof variety which is what I opted for to assure maximum protection.  The organic cotton flannel is tightly woven and protects the mattress from accumulating any grime or sweat.  The material is thick and soft to the touch.  My experiences with other mattress covers is that they are made with synthetic materials and backed with heavy plastic that makes sleeping very uncomfortable because it holds and reflects back your body heat.  Not the Naturepedic.  Even the waterproof variety is breathable and my daughter wakes up fresh and not overly sweaty.  In addition to preventing accidents from spills, smells or other unfortunate events the fact that she is comfortable and the mattress cover doesn’t exacerbate her sweating is a definite plus.

The waterproof organic cotton mattress cover is great for babies and kids, but it’s also fantastic for adults.  We all sweat and get smelly. Nursing mothers have to contend with leakage day and night. If the kids want to come snuggle with mom and dad you have to worry about their accidents or leaky diapers ruining your mattress.  Ladies you know, from puberty to menopause, we have to contend and manage our monthly gift which makes sleeping uncomfortable at best – who wants to try to wash that out of a mattress.  The Naturepedic waterproof mattress cover is breatheable for comfortable sleep and impermeable so even if your sheets and the cover get wet – YOUR MATTRESS WILL NOT.   When it does get dirty you can throw it in the washing machine with a gentle detergent and dry it in your dryer at home or at the laundry mat.

When I got the mattress cover out of the package I immediately put it on my daughters mattress.  I appreciated that it has elastic straps at all four corners to hold it securely to the mattress.  The way my daughter swirls and whirls while she sleeps rolls up anything under her that isn’t securely held to the mattress.  I decided to put it to the test with a few ounces of warm water.  The water was poured slowly on the mattress cover and allowed to sit there for 15 minutes.  During this time the water pooled on the surface of the mattress cover soaking only into the top layer of cotton flannel.  I was able to recover almost the full amount of water by sopping up the excess pooled on the surface with a wash cloth and squeezing it into the cup.  Then I simply removed the cover and tossed it into the dryer on low for 30 minutes and it was like it had never even been wet.  By the way, the mattress was completely dry too :).
