Love-Hate Relationship with Akismet Spam Filter

One aspect of social media and blog promotion is being social.  While I don’t do it at much as I should I try to comment on other’s blogs on a regular basis.  Many of the forums of which I am a member provide lists of blogs seeking comments, Alexa help, Facebook likes, Twitter follows and retweets and so on.  One such forum hosts a Comment Luv Chat every week.  Though most weeks by the time I remember I wanted to go it’s well past the start time this week I remembered to list my blog and sign in.

Then I discovered something very frustrating.  On several of the WordPress blogs on which I was commenting my comment was not showing up at all.  Typically, at least, I get a message that says your comment is awaiting moderation, BUT this time I got nothing.  In the address bar was the number of my comment, but my comment was no where to be seen.  So I reached out to the bloggers on whose blogs I was commenting and asked them to check their Akismet or other spam filter to see if my comments were there.  Lo and behold they were.  Not just on one, but on several!!!

According to Akismet if your comment is marked as spam on one blog it will not affect your commenting ability on other blogs.  I’m kinda doubting this right now because of how frequently and without reason my comments were being sent to spam.  My comments were not short, trite or filled with links.  They were thoughtful and relevant.  Who knows what Akismet was “thinking”.

On my blog I do use Akismet spam filter to great success.  It’s incredible just how many spammers there are out there leaving useless, poorly written, irrelevant comments all over the internet in the hopes for a larger audience.  I have on occasion had to rescue good comments from the spam filters’s grip.

So, if you have a blog and we are friends on Facebook, Twitter or members of the same forum, please check your spam filter for my name.  I’d appreciate it if you could tell your spammenator that I’m not the enemy ;).

Have you ever had issues with a rogue plugin?  I’d love to hear your thoughts below.  I do have Akismet and I do moderate SOOOO if you don’t get the moderation message, but you get a comment number in the address bar then please send me the link on my contact page so I can check it out and tell Akismet to cut it out :).
