Kiss Me Organics Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.
My mom loves to drink tea. Wherever she goes she always has a thermos of tea or at least hot water she can use to make tea. Since she can’t eat fruits and many starchy vegetables she misses out on valuable antioxidants in her diet. Thanks to green tea though she is able to get antioxidants and health benefits she would otherwise be lacking. Turns out there are even better formulations of green tea that pack a nutritional and energy punch far beyond a brewed cup of green tea. The most potent is called matcha.

Until recently I had never heard of Matcha Green Tea. Apparently, matcha is specially grown in the shade so that the levels of nutrients and caffeine remain very high. When harvested the leaves are, traditionally, dried in the shade though the process has been moved indoors and modern drying techniques are used in a controlled environment to preserve color, flavor and prevent oxidation. The leaves are then milled into a fine powder which should be a deep, vibrant green and should have a strong green tea smell and flavor.

[/dropshadowbox]Thanks to Kiss Me Organics I received a complimentary bag of their Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder. It is culinary grade and can be used in smoothies, desserts like cakes or ice cream or to make traditional Japanese usucha or koicha. In our smoothies every day I use a greens blend so the matcha powder was a welcome addition. The powder is very fine and has a tendency to stick to everything it comes in contact with – and I mean everything.  I would suggest using a long handled spoon because otherwise you will end up with matcha all over your hands.  The packaging made preserving the powder a bit problematic.  The zip top plastic bag wouldn’t always seal and when you’d try to remove any excess air trapped inside some of the fine matcha would inevitably fluff out of the package.  In the interest of cost, space and environmental savings I understand the choice of the plastic bag, but it’s not the most convenient.

The matcha powder flavor really packs a green tea punch so you don’t need much to really be able to taste it. Honestly, I was taken aback a little by the intensity of the green tea flavor at first. Once I knew what to expect it was OK. The Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder contains 137 times the antioxidants of brewed green tea, is said to improve energy, mental clarity, skin health and boost the metabolism. On the days that I used the matcha in my smoothies I found myself not needing a second cup of coffee in the afternoon.

I did discover that as with anything moderation is key. One day I went a little matcha powder crazy. I mixed some matcha in my egg custard to make my french toast and then later made some matcha green tea ice cream. The french toast was interesting with a strong green tea and mild hay like flavor that was pleasant and refreshing. It was a nice change for something that is typically very rich and sweet. After lunch I had some of the matcha green tea ice cream and I think I overdid it.  My  husband found the green tea flavor off putting but I really enjoyed it which is probablly why it was so easy to over do it.  After about 30 minutes I developed an all too familiar caffeine stomach ache. Did I mention I’d also had a cup of coffee with breakfast? Yeah, it was too much. I did a little research and learned that 1/2 teaspoon of matcha powder has 34 mg of caffeine! I had significantly more than a 1/2 teaspoon that day.

Thankfully the powder came with, by download, a 50 recipe e-book with options from drinks to lunch to dessert.  There were ideas in there I never would have thought to try.  Since other members of the family turned their nose at the slightly bitter tea flavor of the powder I stuck to individual recipes or sweet preparations that I could try myself.  I may try to sneak some matcha into a chicken dish or maybe even some rice for fun one evening.

When I learned about the benefits of matcha I thought it’d be a good option for my mom to use until that day. Because of her immune disorder she can’t handle caffeine and only drinks decaf green tea or certain herbal teas. I was a little disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to share this nutrient rich green tea powder with her, but it was nothing new when it comes to her dietary restrictions.
