Bienvenidos a La Comida de Mi Vida's New Home

My Life in Food is not a direct translation, but it conveys the idea of what this blog is about.  Food, food, food and more food.  I love food.  I watch the Food Network for kicks and giggles.  I collect recipe books and am a member of numerous recipe sites across the Internet.  I think it would be fun to have an Iron Chef type competition with all our friends.

How did I get this way?  I come from a culturally diverse family.  My father is a good ol’ American boy who is picky to the max and my mom is from Mexico City with a flair and a love for good food.  Meat and potatoes may have been a staple on my dad’s plate, but for my mom, brother and I we had much of the best recipes that Mexico has to offer.  Mole, adobo, albondigas, tamales, arroz, frijoles refritos, escabeche, enchiladas, huachinango, chiles rellenos, pozole, carnitas, chile verde, etc. etc. are all things we learned to love.  This opened our mind and our pallete to other types of ethnic foods.  Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Lebanese/Mediterrannean, and Italian of course.  Some of these may not be much of a stretch for an American pallete especially when the recipes have been adapted for American tastes.  When you have a father who didn’t even taste pizza until he was in his mid-30s and even found a way to be picky about that anything outside HIS comfort zone was a stretch.

Thankfully, I married a man that came up in a house where dad made the kids try everything at least once.  Even stuff like Limburger cheese.  I love cheese, but even that is a stretch for me.  With my husband I started going to more ethnic places and seeking them out.  One I have yet to try is Japanese.

When I worked for a small business man who had traveled to more that 50 countries world wide it made getting along with him and being chosen for overseas trips easy.  I got to go to Barcelona, Spain, New Zealand, Costa Rica, and Mexico.  Not a lot of places, but they were definitely a chance to try new things.

Come share in my journey with food.  I’ll be posting new recipes as I try them.  Usually, I try about 1 or 2 new ones a week.  We are trying to save money so eating out will be rare for us for a while, but when we try something new and interesting I’ll add it here.

Buen Provecho!
