Same Day Delivery. . . . By Another Customer???

Same Day DeliveryThis morning I saw a report on CNN about a new service that Amazon, Google, eBay and Wal-Mart among others are thinking of trying out: SAME DAY DELIVERY. The concept itself sounds great if your item is in stock at a nearby store. One problem I am imagining is cost – this can’t be cheap.

Then the reporter said that according to Reuters that Wal-Mart is considering asking customers IN the store, like at checkout, if they would be willing to deliver a local package in exchange for a coupon or discount card. As soon as she said this all kinds of bells and whistles went off in my head. Once the item is released from the store into this person’s custody how will they be assured that it will be delivered in tact? How do they know this person’s mental stability, reliability and who do you hold liable if something goes terribly wrong? Are they going to require that the person leave their address and contact information so they can MAIL them the coupon or whatever so at least they have some leverage – and a way to go after them if they don’t comply? What’s to keep people from giving phony contact information just so they can abscond with someone else’s already-paid-for goods???

You’re probably thinking, “This lady is c-r-a-z-y, CRAZY.” Paranoid maybe. Crazy, no. The news lets us in on all kinds of screwed up things that happen in the most unlikely places to the most unlikely people because people are unpredictable and sometimes downright selfish. As much as I’d like to think that the majority of society is as honest and upright as my close group of friends I’m realistic and cautious.

I’ll go to the store myself or wait a day or two to have my purchases delivered by a person in a big white FedEx or big brown UPS truck, thank you very much.

How do you feel?
