CreaClip Review – At Home Hair Cutting Made Simple

CreaClip – At Home Hair Cutting Saves Time and Money

M2U00227-002Thank you to CreaProducts for providing the CreaClip Product for the purposes of this review.

First of all I’d like to apologize to Mai Lieu for taking a bit longer than expected on the review. I wanted to incorporate the full video experience with the written review and I ran into some technical glitches in the process. Hopefully my first attempt at a YouTube production in your behalf adds value to what I’m about to write :).

CreaClip – What Is It?

The CreaClip is a helper for your hands when you are trying to cut your hair or someone elses at home. The clip is made of plastic and comes in two sizes and shapes. The large curved white clip is intended for use on longer styles and can be used with the curve facing up or down depending on the style you seek. The small blue clip is straight and perfect for cutting bangs, side fringes, short styles, men’s haircuts and trims in between visits to the salon. Both versions are lined with little teeth that act like combs and also help to lock the clip into your hair. The clips lock shut at the open end to provide a secure hold. They both come equipped with a level which allows you to acheive a perfect cut whether you are cutting straight across or at an angle.

My Experience

I was understandably nervous and excited when I received the CreaClip. My hair is my crowning glory – I love it and I didn’t want to screw it up. It had been quite some time since I’d had a decent cut though and my hair was in need of a serious refreshing. My mother has always cut my hair. Almost always, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had it cut at a salon or allowed anyone else to cut it. I’ve always been happy with the results. The problem I’m facing is that Mom’s getting older, her hands hurt, her eyes aren’t that great anymore and she tires easily because of issues with fibromyalgia. So out of kindness I was seriously considering going to a salon for my next haircut. Truth is I’m cheap frugal.

When I heard about the CreaClip on YouTube I was intrigued. So when I got the opportunity to review it I jumped at the chance. A week later I had the package in my hands and I spent the next week watching YouTube videos – instructional and reviews and practicing how to put the clip in my hair and keep it leveled. This took some doing at first because the level bubble wouldn’t move much at first and then all of the sudden shoot to the other side of the level. Turns out you do need a good amount of patience with the level.

Finally I got brave, pulled out the video camera and started cutting.  What I appreciated most about the CreaClip was it’s ease of use.  It easily grasped all my hair, held it steady and allowed me to ‘hold’ much more hair with ONE HAND than I would normally be able to when cutting my hair.  There wasn’t a need to keep going back over and over my hair to make sure the cut was even because as long as I had all my hair combed straight, held tightly in the clip and had it leveled I was assured of an even cut.  The next thing I appreciated is that I didn’t nick my knuckles with the scissors like I usually do when trying to trim my own hair.  I didn’t have any need for bandaids after I was done!

Using CreaClip to Cut Someone Else’s Hair

After successfully cutting my own hair I got brave and decided to trim both my daughters’ hair styles using both the small and the large CreaClip.  Both of them have bangs that needed a trimming.  This is always such a chore because they can’t seem to sit still and even the littlest movement screws me up if I’m just trying to hold their hair with my left hand.  Inevitably their bangs end  up crooked for all my efforts.

For my youngest daughter to even out the back of her hair and cut her bangs I used the small clip.  It took me five minutes to do both the front and back and she was amazed that she didn’t have to get her hair wet OR sit for a long time.  My older daughter is not as squirmy but she still gets frustrated having to sit for so long.  Trimming her bangs took a matter of minutes which made her happy.  I had to go back a couple of times to make sure her haircut in the back was correct and even because she has thick hair.  It was previously cut in a graduated bob shape (longer in the front) and it had grown out.  The portion in the back was getting long enough to curl up on it’s own and mess up the hair on top.

Using Mai Lieu’s instructions from a YouTube video on cutting a bob haircut I gathered all my daughter’s hair in to the small clip and had her tuck her chin into her chest while I held the clip steady.  This motion ensured that the hair on the top would be slightly longer than the hair underneath allowing for it to curl under easily.  The front portion of her hair had to be evened out since it was looking a little scraggly.  Using the length of the back as a guide I slightly angled the CreaClip up towards her chin using the level one click in the opposite direction of the angle I wanted to cut.  Once the CreaClip was in the position needed to make the level, well, level I moved it down the hair until the extra long portion in the front and about 1/2 of the ends of the rest of the hair closer to the back was still sticking under the clip.  I moved the level out of the way, held the clip with my left hand and cut with the right.  Total it may have taken me 15 minutes to trim and even out her haircut which hadn’t had a good refreshing in months.

My mom had told several friends about the CreaClip and she arranged for me to cut their hair too.  At first I was flipping out a little bit, but after I cut my own and my girls hair I figured if they were willing to submit to my experiment I would try to help them.  The day we got together three ladies agreed for me to cut their hair using the CreaClip.  I think seeing my results gave them hope that everything would turn out OK.

The first woman didn’t want to have much cut off of her extra long hair.  I used the large CreaClip in the Smily Face position to trim 2 inches off the length.  The next woman had slightly longer than shoulder length hair and she wanted her hair layered but still long enough to pull back into a pony tail.  You could tell she had some layers but very, very slightly graduated.  Since she had the same issue as I did of not having very long hair that it could all go into and stay in the clip I did the back trim first with the large CreaClip, then pulled the hair from the front (parting from just behind the ears) and pulling it all forward into the large CreaClip in the Frowny Face position I cut about an 1-1/2″ off the length stopping at chin level to give her some added top layers.  I used the small clip to trim her bangs.  Her cut was the easiest I feel even though there was more involved because she was enjoying the process.

All in all I will definitely be using the CreaClip again for myself, my girls and anyone else who needs a cut.  Actually, my sister-in-law wants a trim so I have that yet to do.  She said she’d trust me so I hope it turns out well.  Using the CreaClip is practically fool proof so I can’t see why it wouldn’t.  After watching many, many videos on YouTube it seems like the options are endless and you can be as conservative or as crazy as you want with the CreaClip and you’ll always get perfectly graduated layers and even cuts.
