#OldFactory Candles Gift Set Review

When I was growing up I was taught that candles were only for emergencies.  If the lights went out then we’d get out our emergency candles.  Using them for recreation or enjoyment was out of the question.  Why?  My mother had had bad experiences with candles in her house as a child.  Too many reckless and absent minded accidents that led to my complete cutting off of this item in  my home.  Fast forward 30 years and candles still make me nervous, BUT I love the way they smell.  So does my husband and he’s always asking why we never have candles around.

What I don’t like, other than the potential to burn my house down, is the smoke and soot they produce in addition the sweet fragrances.  Thanks to Red Rover Naturals I received a gift pack of three Old Factory Candles for the purposes of review.  After much debate with my husband and older daughter we finally decided to order the Fresh & Clean gift set which contains Lemongrass, Fresh Linen and Olive Blossom scented candles.  It was a toss up between this one, Vacation & Coffee Shop (see below).

OldFactoryCandlesEach candle is 2 ounces. They come poured in a small glass jar with a black screw top lid which comes in handy for smothering the flame and for storage.  They burn for 20 hours, give or take an hour or two.  I say this because I burnt the Fresh Linen every day for 3 days for about 6 hours each day until it wouldn’t burn any more.  It would have burnt for longer had I noticed sooner that a mild draft from the furnace vent was making it burn unevenly and I should have been turning the candle every so often for that to happen.  I kept it in the middle of a deep window sill right in front of my sink in the kitchen.  Out of reach of curious hands, away from wood and paper and near water made the burning of the candle that much more enjoyable.  My favorite scent is Olive Blossom, then Lemongrass and finally the Fresh Linen.  All of them filled not only the kitchen and dining room with their fragrance they filled the whole house with their aroma.  What I found particularly impressive was that one evening we came home after being gone several hours and we could still smell the candle in the air even after having been put out.

These candles do burn clean.  I did not find any soot or notice any smoke while they were burning.  When I tried to put out the flame that was another story.  The first time I blew out the candle – big mistake.  The force of my breath sloshed around the melted wax and forced smoke into the air.  After that I made a conscious effort to smolder the flame with the lid or a miniature demitasse saucer.  The little saucers worked well.  The candle sat on one just in case the little jar got too hot and the other was used to put out the candle and contain any resulting smoke.

I must mention these are made in the USA.  I’m not a nationalistic person, but it makes me happy to use a product which is actually still made here.OFCmadeinUSA
