Make Your Own Self Sustaining Enclosed Eco-System

Gardening doesn’t just have to be done outside.  If you want the pleasure of seeing the beauty of nature on your own windowsill without worrying about the plants drying out or getting some kind of weird disease.  You need to check this out.

Make a Terrarium

This 80-year-old man, David Latimer, has grown a garden sealed inside of a giant glass bottle since 1960 and he’s only opened it ONCE!

Using this giant glass bottle, some compost, and a quarter pint of water he planted a spiderwort sprout using wires. The only time he ever opened it was in 1972 to add some water but it has since been completely enclosed never being opened even to water again.  All it’s needed since then is plenty of water.

How Does IT Work?

The bacteria in the compost break down the dead plants and break down the oxygen given off by the plants, turning it into the carbon dioxide that the plants need to survive. The bottle is an excellent micro version of the earth as a whole. Of course the bottle is tightly sealed preventing evaporation of the water or escape of any of the essential gases.
