Wild Penguin Ice Cream Protein Treats

What Is Satiety?

Satiety is a subject that anyone who is on a diet or is fitness conscious is very familiar with.  It is the ability to feel full and comfortably satisfied with what you eat without overindulging.  The true measure of a truly satiating food is how long it keeps you that way.

Some foods may fill your belly to the brim but after a little while leave you with a feeling of hunger, a headache or just not feeling very well at all.  When looking for a meal or a snack you need to search for something that has enough fiber and protein to help you maintain that feeling of satisfaction.  There are some candy bars out there that claim to satisfy, but what you end up with is a calorie laden sugar-bomb that gives you a very quick boost and then drops you like a cannon ball out of the sky.  Is there a sweet treat that can satisfy your sweet tooth as well as fulfill your need for satiety?

Satisfied by Ice Cream

Yes, you read that right – ice cream.  Thanks to Advertise with Bloggers and Wild Penguin I had the privilege of trying and sharing with my family an ice cream treat that actually satiates.  Wild Penguin Ice Cream Protein Treats are ice cream bars on a stick.  The bars come in Vanilla Fudge or Chocolate Fudge flavor.  They are sweet but very low in sugar content as they are sweetened with sucralose and other sugar substitutes.

Each bar has 120 calories, 10 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, and 2.5 grams of fat.  What does all this mean?  For an ice cream treat it is relatively low in calories.  You won’t get the after effects of a sugar high for two reasons – they’re low in sugars and high in fiber and protein.  Six percent dietary fiber, derived from chicory root, is one-fourth of your day’s suggested intake!  Protein needs vary from person to person.  A 160 lb. person who exercises moderately for health or weight loss needs between 58 – 109 grams per day.*  At 10 grams of protein each bar has as much protein as 2 small eggs!**  Eggs are great for breakfast but in the middle of the afternoon I’d much rather have a cool ice cream bar without the guilt.  For me that was exactly what these bars supplied.

Our Experience

As soon as we got the box of Wild Penguin Ice Protein Treats on our doorstep we first got them out and photographed them :).  It was cool to see the 8 boxes all packed in dry ice in a big brick of Styrofoam   When I opened up the boxes to see the ice cream bars I was amazed at first to see how big they were!  We tried one of each right away.  If you have ever tried a whey based protein drink or powder you will find the taste very similar.  The vanilla and chocolate flavors both are very pleasant and not at all artificial tasting.   The protein treats tasted like ice cream which if you love ice cream and are trying to watch your calories is a huge plus.  The bars are very creamy and have a nice mouthfeel.

What I instantly found incredible about these ice cream protein treats is that for the next few hours (almost 4 as a matter of fact) I didn’t feel the need to snack, munch or a hankering for anything sweet.  That for me is amazing in the middle of the afternoon.  Around supper time I actually had a hard time feeling hungry!  The feeling of satiety really was long lasting.  Granted, I didn’t too a lot of physical activity later that day, but for a normal afternoon of housecleaning, writing, cooking and dish washing I was totally satisfied.  It was pleasing to find that I didn’t have the sugar high crash about an hour after I finished the protein treat which is typical of many protein bars I’ve tried.  I’ve had at least one bar every day since we got them and have continued to experience the feeling of satiety the box promised.
