Learning to cook with a slow cooker is a handy and sometimes essential skill. Whether you have a family with lots of kids, just a couple starting out or a busy, working single lifestyle home cooked meals are a comfort to the belly and the wallet. Making your meals ahead of time can save you time when you get home from a busy day of carting kids all over town or slaving over a desk. Who wants to cook when they are physically and mentally exhausted? I know I don’t.
You’d think that you could just throw whatever into a slow cooker and – voila – dinner’s on. You can royally screw it up though if you don’t use the proper combinations of ingredients to make sure your meal comes out moist and tasty. When I was in college I remember a couple time stinking up the dorms because I tried to cook chicken in the slow cooker. Some people would tell you it’s impossible to do and to not even try, but my mom had done it for years and still does. To this day I can’t get my slow cooker chicken as good as hers, but it’s light years away from the stinky lack of recipe garbage I tried to make when I was in college. Too bad I didn’t have this handy little cookbook Slow Cooker Recipes for Beginners which I recently received for review.
This electronic cookbook of slow cooker recipes is available in Kindle format for download via Amazon. It contains 55 modern and delicious recipes. The cookbook is replete with easy to follow recipes for side dishes, main dishes and full meals in a crock pot or slow cooker. You will have to do a little bit of experimenting with timing and temperature when you use your slow cooker because no two are alike. There are three, yes 3, slow cookers in my kitchen and they all cook differently and are well suited for different kinds of recipes. The recipes in this book should do well in any kind of slow cooker, but like I said only you will be able to tell if the slow cooking time is too long or too short, too hot or too cold.
Some of the recipes like the Chicken Piccatta and Curried Chicken Breasts involve a little extra prep with the microwave and stove top. That being said using a slow cooker to finish the dish allows you to practically set it and forget it until you need to get ready to serve the food. From experience I can tell you using a slow cooker is a God-send for a mother of young and/or infant children. It is very impractical to spend a lot of time slaving over stove full of hot pans when your baby needs attention and there is no one else around to help out. Don’t get me started on trying to cook once they start crawling or walking. Play yards can only hold back a toddler’s little body for so long (eventually they do figure out how to escape) and it doesn’t stop the crying. . . and screaming. But I digress. . .for a busy person or a beginning cook this book is a great tool to have available. You can learn to cook just for you, for your family or to prepare food for a get-together with friends.
