This is the first time I’ve ever sprouted seeds and I’m so excited. I do not have a sprouter, but I used a jar covered with cheesecloth to do the process. I received the organic three seed kit for the purposes of review. The box is very cute and perfect for a gift for a gardener/home cook who likes to grow their own food. Inside there are 3 little plastic bags with the seeds. Each weighs around 20 grams. This is A LOT of seeds.
After doing some searching on the internet I found several sites with detailed instructions on how to sprout without a special tray. The instructions on the box are adequate, but I’m always looking for more and supporting information for something I’ve never done before. I used 1 tsp of each of the broccoli, mustard and beet seeds for my first attempt. Following the instructions on the box I allowed them to soak for 8 hours and then proceeded for the next 4 days rinsing every 6 to 10 hours (depending on my schedule) making sure I did this at least three times a day. After 24 hours you could see the seed coat breaking open. The next day the little sprout roots started to emerge.
On day 3 the leaves broke through and started to grow. The next day I put the jar on the counter top under our under-cabinet lights so that they could green up a little bit. This is the 5th day they’ve been in the jar and they are going strong. The leaves are starting to turn green so I may remove them from the jar this afternoon or early tomorrow and put them in the refrigerator in a little container to keep them fresh. . . if we don’t eat them all up first! I tasted them yesterday and they are a very pleasant combination of sweet, mild and spicy. From what I could tell there were no broken seeds or ones which failed to grow. Any little dark pieces at the bottom of the jar are simply the seed coats which came detached from the sprouts. These bits are not hard anymore and are also edible and a good source of fiber. One of my favorite ways to eat sprouts is with some lemon or lime and salt and also on sandwiches or in wraps.
I was surprised, but shouldn’t have been, that both my girls liked the sprouts on their sandwiches for lunch. It’s kind of funny I’m known by the teachers at school as “the mom who makes awesome sandwiches”. My girls always have greens or sprouts of some kind on their sammies along with a yummy piece of fruit. They not only need to be fed, but nourished as well.
