If you’ve ever had to treat acne you are probably familiar with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, but what is mandelic acid? Mandelic acid is an aromatic alpha-hydroxy acid derived from extract of bitter almond and diluted with hydrochloric acid. It’s used as a precursor for many pharmaceuticals, but is also widely used as a chemical face peel.
Thanks to Vivant Skin Care I received a sample of their Mandelic Acid 3-in-1 wash for the purposes of review. After reading up on the uses of mandelic acid and reviews of others about using it as a chemical face peel I was hopeful that this wash would be gentle enough to treat my breakouts and help to smooth my skin. The gel has a very pleasant fragrance akin to baby wash. When mixed with water it produces a nice thick foam which is perfect for shaving legs. It did not take a great deal of gel to create a lot of foam. It’s supposed to be good for preventing and treating ingrown hairs.
I used it specifically on my face and back in an effort to stem the breakouts in those areas. Every day for a week I used the wash on those areas. Unfortunately, the wash had an opposite effect. Instead of the breakouts drying up, they got worse. There was a possibility that the breakouts were hormonal in nature so I waited a week and tried again and within 12 hours of using the wash the areas I used the wash on were inflamed again.
The wash smelled nice. It felt nice. There was no drying effect. It was great for shaving. Unfortunately, I had an adverse reaction to the wash. I may wait another month and try it out again.

This powerful yet gentle antioxidant wash has Mandelic derived from almonds, green tea extract, grape seed, kiwi fruit and honey extracts. Mandelic is ideal for adult acne because of it’s anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. On blotchy skin it “lifts” skin discolorations and dark spots, while also having the benefical side effect of rejuvenating fine lines by helping to generate new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
A powerful yet gentler form of Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Mandelic is also ideal for treating sensititve Black, Hispanic, and Asian skin that becomes irritated by harsh benzoyl peroxide products.
Helps ingrown hairs and can also be used as a shampoo on scalp to control dandruff and acne.
