Slick 2-in-1 Collapsible Silicone & Stainless Steel Strainer/#Colander

I received this colander just a few days after I burnt myself using my old stainless steel one. Because of the shape of the bowl when I poured out my boiling hit pot of pasta the hot water swished around the curve of the bowl, shot upward and burnt my tummy. OUCH!!

The shape of this new silicone and stainless steel colander what happened before is almost impossible. I’ve strained and rinsed everything from beans to pasta to greens and potatoes both hot and cold. I have yet to have the water splash up on me like it did with the other colander. The silicone portion stays fairly cool to the touch even when in contact with boiling water or hot food.

The non-skid feet are great to keep me from accidentally knocking the colander – full or empty- off the counter. My girls love the look and shape of this little kitchen tool so much they actually argue about who is going to use it next. Washing it is a breeze with mild soap and warm water. I’m sure it would withstand the dishwasher, but I don’t like the smell and flavor imparted to silicone by the washing detergent so I only wash this by hand. Putting it away is also super easy because it compacts to a manageable size, little more than the thickness of a dinner plate. You can even stick it in a drawer if you need to for space saving. I collapse mine and tuck it on top of my salad spinner and mixing bowls in the cupboard. Plus, this will be great when we go on our camping vacation since it is so compact!

Something that isn’t addressed in the ebook or the description of the item is that it withstands enough heat that it can be used as a steamer insert. Other similar colanders/steamers suggest collapsing it 1/3 of the way, placing it in the pot above the boiling water and filling it with the veggies for steaming. It’s great for fresh or frozen veg.

The only issue I found with this colander is that no matter how much I swish or tip the bowl to drain too much water collects at the bottom in my opinion. This leaves the food at the bottom too wet or spills out onto or into your other receptacle when moving the food. I’ve had this happen with small potatoes, beans, noodles and greens. I’m not sure if there are not enough holes or if a different configuration of drainage holes would improve the situation.

I received this colander free in exchange for my honest review. These opinions are my own and based on my personal experience with this item. Your experience may be different than mine.
