Many people associate the first day of spring with March 21, not March 20.
Spring is HERE! But wait, it’s not March 21?!?! Though we have been taught that March 21 is the first day of spring or the vernal equinox it turns out that it is only an estimation. Over the past 100 years March 21 has been an exception as the first day of spring rather than the rule. Even being very much interested in gardening I’ve rather taken this fact for granted.
It was gratifying to learn that fall and winter are actually getting shorter and spring and summer are getting longer, to a point. The reasons why this happens are beyond my scope of expetise, but their implications make me happy – longer growing seasons – even if it is be just a few hours or maybe a day or two.
