If you’ve read any of my posts on my blog We Are Earthformed you will know that I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my life.  Recently, I fell off the fitness wagon and that’s when NutriSpring came into the picture.  I applied for this review because I wanted to see if there was indeed an all natural supplement that would be able to increase my metabolism without giving me the jitters.  Over the last 15 years I’ve tried practically every incarnation of the diet pill, the so called “miracles-in-a-bottle”, which have only led to an empty wallet and terrible jitters that made me feel awful.

I had heard about Green Coffee Bean extract from the Dr. Oz show and often wondered why drinking coffee would not render the same results.  I mean, I’ve been drinking coffee daily (except during my pregnancies) for 15 years and I just keep getting fat.  What’s the difference?

Thanks to NutriSpring I learned the differnce.  They were kind enough to send some educational material along with the bottle of Green Coffee Bean Extract.  The difference between roasted coffee beans, what we grind and drink, and green (unroasted) coffee beans is chlorogenic acid.

What does chlorogenic acid do?

Chlorogenic acid is present in coffee beans UNTIL you roast them.  Once they are roasted they lose this nutritive property.  Ever heard of “killing” your vegetables by over cooking?  In this case roasting “kills” the chlorogenic acid in the coffee bean.

The role of chlorogenic acid when it comes to weight loss is…

  • It inhibits the formation of glucose (sugar) in the liver
  • Slows the absorption of fat from food intake
  • Activates the metabolism of extract fat (so you burn more fat at rest)

Check out a study of the use of green coffee bean extract in the January 2012 issue of Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity journal.  It’s a little technical, but during the six week trials significant reductions in body weight, body fat percentage and BMI were observed.  What’s important about this is that no significant changes were made to diet or exercise regimens.

How did it work for me?

I started taking the Green Coffee Bean Extract supplement as soon as I received it.  I’ve been able to take it for about 3 weeks straight.  I did not change my diet or increase my exercise.  Though my weight did fluctuate a bit, ±2 lbs., I noticed a reduction in body fat percentage.  When I started my body fat percentage was 36.4%.  Today my body fat percentage is 34.1% (measured on my left side for both).  To say I was amazed was an understatement.  It was a little disappointing that my overall weight did not reduce as I hoped, but a reduction in body fat is something.

As per the instructions I took it every day 30 minutes before two meals with an 8 ounce glass of water.  I kept forgetting to take it in the morning so I took it with lunch and supper.  This pattern had to stop because though the veggie caps do not have a significant amount of caffeine it was just enough to keep me up at night if I took it with supper.  Soooo, I had to make a concerted effort to take it with breakfast and lunch, instead.  Other than the slight sleeplessness from taking it in the evening I did not notice an increase in energy.  There were no jitters.  I did, however, experience an unexpected side effect – dizziness.  After a few days of dizziness I stopped taking the supplement to make sure that was indeed what was causing the vertigo.  Three days later I picked up taking it again and again started experiencing the dizziness within an hour of eating after having taken the veggie cap.  It wasn’t enough to make me feel like I was going to fall over but it was unnerving.

Conclusion

If you are overweight and need something to help give you a boost for the metabolism you may want to give this a try.  After reading the study noted above this could very well be beneficial for those who need to bring their weight down to control diabetes.  For anyone else who is trying to get in shape this might help you overcome a plateau.  A plateau and a few other things are what tanked my weight loss progress a few months ago. Starting to take this supplement and seeing that it worked even a little bit have made me start exercising again.  Not only do I want to reduce my body fat, but I want to be stronger and no bottle is going to build my muscles, heart and lung capacity without some extra effort on my part.
